Jennifer Lowry, Scott Pruitt and Karen Remley
On May 24, Jennifer Lowry, MD, FACMT, and Karen Remley, MD, (Executive Director, AAP) were invited to meet with Scott Pruitt, Administrator of the EPA, Ruth Etzel (Director, Office of Children's Health Protection) and Wendy Cleland-Hamnett (Acting Assistant Administrator to Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention). Dr. Remley introduced Mr. Pruitt to the AAP and the discussion on environmental health of children. Dr. Lowry (who is also the PI for PEHSU Region 7, which is under ACMT management) introduced Mr. Pruitt to the AAP Council on Environmental Health, which she also chairs. She explained that pediatricians are concerned about environmental effects on children’s health. They left Mr. Pruitt with the Chemicals Management, Lead and Climate Change policies.
Administrator Pruitt recognized that clean air and water are important for children, and everyone agreed that collaboration should continue regarding lead in schools and pesticides/Zika. Dr. Lowry adds that she was consistent in her message that the health of children is a nonpartisan issue.
