Meet MTF Board President Dr. Erica Liebelt

The Medical Toxicology Foundation (MTF) is the charitable arm of the ACMT and operates with an independent board of directors, who are prominent medical toxicologists. Just in case you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting her, the MTF is pleased to introduce you to Board President Erica Liebelt, MD, FACMT, FAAP. 

Dr. Erica Liebelt is the Executive Director and Medical Director of the Washington Poison Center and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics & Emergency Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. In her current position, she leads the management and oversight of medical direction including consultation on management of poisoned patients and development of clinical guidelines. Dr. Liebelt also serves as the leader of the nonprofit organization where she drives strategic planning, fundraising and operations for the organization.

She relocated to Seattle from Birmingham, Alabama where she spent 13 years as Professor of Pediatrics & Emergency Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, Co-Medical Director of the Regional Poison Control Center/Birmingham, Director of Medical Toxicology Services at the Children’s Hospital of Alabama, and Medical Director of Medication Safety. She has held previous faculty appointments at Yale University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. 

Dr. Liebelt graduated summa cum laude from Duke University and graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine with Highest Honors. Her postgraduate medical education included a Pediatric Residency at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio followed by a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at Children’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and a Medical Toxicology and Pharmacology Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Poison Control Center in Boston.

Dr. Liebelt has served on several expert panels for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She served on the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) Board of Directors for 13 years, finishing her tenure as Board President in 2010. Dr. Liebelt is the current Board President of the Medical Toxicology Foundation (MTF) and Chair of the American Association of Poison Control Center (AAPCC) Medical Directors’ Advisory Council. She has also served as a member of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) Medical Toxicology Subboard. 

She has authored 35 book chapters for leading toxicology textbooks and over 45 manuscripts and review articles. Dr. Liebelt has lectured both nationally and internationally on various topics in Medical Toxicology, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and medication safety. Her research and clinical interests include the pharmacogenomics of psychotropic medications; quality of care for poisoned patients; antidepressant poisoning; and pediatric environmental toxicology, specifically lead poisoning. She volunteers for medical mission work in Ecuador with the Santiago Partnership.
